Uniting the school with a fairy tale story

Palisades Elementary is taking a different approach to reading this month. Every student, teacher and staff member in the building is reading the same book.

It’s this year’s special reading incentive program, said Kelly Dibelka, the school’s media specialist.

“This year we thought of a way to do one common thing for the whole school,” Dibelka said.

The book “The Castle in the Attic” by Elizabeth Winthrop was introduced to the student body last Friday in the commons area that was decorated as a castle. Dibelka dressed up as the queen while music teacher John Balcer portrayed the king and teacher Mike Kimnach and Andy Drake played the protecting knights.

Dibelka said teachers picked the book because it would appeal to children of different ages.
