However, winning in front of the home crowd this year meant a bit more.
The Raymond Central senior dominated in winning the invite at 135 pounds, but that wasn’t his biggest accomplishment of the day.
After a quick 58-second pin fall victory against his first opponent, Pohlman set a new school record for career wins.
“It’s cool to have a record at school,” Pohlman said. “It was four years of hard work that finally paid off.”
Pohlman won his other three matches of invite by the scores of 16-0, 11-2 and 12-4. The coaches voted him as the invite’s most outstanding wrestler.
He finished the day at 147 wins, breaking former teammate Ethan Studebaker’s record of 143.
“I’ll just have to rub it in a little later,” Pohlman joked. “Now Aaron (Studebaker) is trying to break my record.”
The younger Studebaker is a sophomore, who also helped improve his win total. Studebaker placed first by winning all three of his matches.
He won his first match by pin in 1:17 and then earned a 3-0 decision win in the second round. In the final at 160 pounds, he won by pin in 4:43.
Tyler Schmitt (103) also had an impressive day by finishing third.
He earned a narrow 3-2 win to start the day, but was then pinned in his next match. He rebounded for a 13-1 win and then an 8-4 win in the consolation final.
Eric Draper (189) placed fifth. He lost his first match 9-5, but then bounced back to win his next two matches, 7-2 and 3-1. He then lost 10-3 before pinning his final opponent in 4:46.
Jeremiah Ludwig (152) finished in sixth place. He started the day with back-to-back pin fall wins in 1:27 and 1:49. However, he would then get pinned in his final three matches.
Zach Escamilla (119) also finished sixth. He lost by pin in all three of his matches.
Malachi Rittenburg (285) was pinned in his first match but then won his final three matches by pin in times of 45 seconds, 1:31 and 4:34.
Steven Davidson (125) lost by pin and then by a 12-8 decision. Alex Hageman (140) lost both his matches by technical fall. Cameron Golter (145) lost a 6-3 decision and then by forfeit. Justin Matulka (171) lost by pin and then by a 6-0 decision.
The Mustangs finished seventh with 105.5 points. Auburn won the invite with 201.
