Be a Santa program running through Dec. 9

Published: Sunday, November 8, 2009 5:14 AM CST

Anyone out trolling the aisles at ShopKo last Sunday may have noticed that the annual Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas tree is up and it’s time again to brighten the holidays for seniors in need.

The program, which delivered more than 450 gifts to local seniors last year, aims to ensure that lonely and isolated seniors receive gifts and companionship during the season.

Shoppers visiting the store at 601 Galvin Road S. will see the tree complete with ornaments bearing the first name and gift request of a senior identified by Home Instead Senior Care. The shoppers can then pick up the ornament, buy the items on the list and return them unwrapped to the store with the ornament attached.

Home Instead will then enlist volunteers to help collect, wrap and distribute the gifts to the seniors. A community gift-wrapping event will be held Dec. 11 and gifts will be delivered the week of Dec. 14.

Anyone interested in helping out with the gift-wrapping should contact Fred Grossman at 292-6611. Businesses are encouraged to adopt groups of seniors. For more information about the program, visit www.beasantatoasenior.com.
