Sending old DVDs overseas

Like father like son, and two more of his children, Ken Glover and his family are tied to the Lincoln Air National Guard. Glover, an elementary teacher at Thomas Elementary, served in the Lincoln Air National Guard for 25 years. Three of his children are with the guard, which includes his 27-year-old son, Jerry Glover.

The latest news in the Glover family is that Jerry Glover had been deployed to a military base in Kandahar, Afghanistan, the second-largest city there.

Ken Glover said Jerry left early in September to first complete combat training in Wisconsin and then go on to Afghanistan. Glover said he receives e-mails and talks to Jerry often. He has access to a satellite phone, unlike some other soldiers who don’t get to call home as regularly.

Jerry’s job is working on and fixing generators. Jerry and others work 13-hour days and when they are not working, they try to keep busy.

Glover said Jerry bought a DVD player and tries to watch movies. At the base, which is five miles by fives miles large, they all share DVDs.

With the help of the Thomas Elementary staff, teachers and students, Glover asked to collect used DVDs that will be mailed overseas to Jerry’s base.

“So that is what prompted my wife and I,” he said. “It was something we could do to help him and the rest of the guys.”

The next week, those from Thomas had asked administration at all Gretna Public School buildings to help with the collection. There is a donation box at all three elementary buildings, as well as the high school and middle school.

Glover said people have given him DVDs, some brand new, to donate. He already mailed 30 movies last week and expects to mail more this week.

Donations will be accepted until Nov. 10 so that all the DVDs from all buildings can be given to Glover at the Thomas Veterans Day program on Nov. 11.

Any gently-used DVD will be accepted, even if it’s a romantic comedy or animation movie.

“He’s going to have a mixture of all kinds of stuff,” Glover said.
