In honor of November being proclaimed Military Family Month by President Barack Obama and to show recognition for local military members and their families, the Papillion-La Vista School District will hold the Military Family Appreciation Festival and Lunch on Sunday, Nov. 8.
This free event is open to all members of any branch of the military and their families and they do not have to live in the Papillion-La Vista area.
“Our military population seems to be growing,” said Annette Eyman, communications director for PLSD. “And I think with what’s going on in our country, the importance of the military family is critical, not only in our country but in our community. That was why we wanted to recognize our military families. We see a lot of students who have parents deployed – we see it from the school perspective so we want to do something to try to support that concept of the military family.”
This is the first year the school district has held a military appreciation event. SAC Federal Credit Union is sponsoring the festival. It will feature a light lunch of hotdogs and chips, a magic show, bounce houses, an interactive video game, face painting, clowns, karaoke and the PLSD JROTC.
The Raptor Recovery Nebraska, Inc. will bring in eagles, hawks and other various birds of prey, some of the high school cheerleaders will be teaching cheers to children and live animals will be present from Gifford Farms
A short program featuring special guest Brigadier General John N.T. Shanahan, Commander, 55th Wing, Offutt Air Force Base will be at 11:30 a.m
Eyman said Gen. Shanahan was asked to speak because PLSD wanted someone from the base who symbolized the military family. Gen. Shanahan’s wife, Laura, along with other military spouses were asked to be on the planning committee for this event to help give input from military family members.
Also, La Vista Mayor Doug Kindig and Papillion Mayor David Black will be present to give a proclamation declaring November as Military Family Month.
Eyman said PLSD wanted to put on this event to give recognition to the military members and their families in and around the Papillion-La Vista area and to recognize “the sacrifices that the military families make.”
“(The festival is) just the district's way of saying thank you to the military families,” she said. “We see the sacrifices and we just want to show our appreciation for that.”
The Military Family Appreciation Festival and Lunch will be at Papillion-La Vista South High School, 10799 Highway 370, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This event is open to all members of the military, families and the public. For questions, contact Annette Eyman at aeyman@paplv.esu3.orgor 537-6209.
