Nebraska Brewing Company won three silver medals in the US Open Beer Championships. The competition, open to more than 1,000 breweries and brewpubs from 30 countries, as well as the 29 National Homebrewing Champions from the United States and Canada is the first to include professional breweries and award winning homebrewers. Judging took place in more than 50 categories, with winners in first-, second-, and third-place receiving medals.
Nebraska Brewing Company’s Chardonnay Blonde Reserve won a silver medal in the Wood/Barrel Aged Strong Beer category. The Fathead 140 Scotch Ale placed a silver medal in the Barley Wine Category. The Black Betty Russian Imperial Stout won a silver medal in the Imperial Stout Category. The Chardonnay Blonde Reserve was Nebraska Brewing Company’s first foray into barrel aging. The Fathead 140 Scotch Ale and Black Betty Russian Imperial stout are currently barrel aging and expect to be released later this year.
Nebraska Brewing Company is located in Shadow Lake Towne Center at 72nd Street and Highway 370, and owned and operated by Paul and Kim Kavulak.
NFWC State Convention
The 113th Annual Convention of the GFWC Nebraska Federation of Women's Clubs was held recently at the New World Inn in Columbus. Members of the GFWC Papillion Junior Woman's Club, the GFWC Papillion Woman's Club, and the GFWC Horizons Woman's Club were in attendance. Ladies attending from the above clubs were Mary Shaw, Jan Jones, Kathy Flock, Cheryl Strickler, Judy Anderson and Karen Crandall. Speakers for the event were Lori Miller, Domestic Violence Counselor; Bill Luckey, President of Nebraska Pork Producer's Association; and Mary Ellen Ducey, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Archivist. Special guest and speaker for the convention was Dr. Rose M. Ditto, GFWC President, who spoke on GFWC programs, updates and the GFWC Women's History and Resource Center. Kevin Warneke, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House, gave an update about the facility and the families it serves. The Nebraska Federation gave 1,336,500 pop tabs to the organization at the convention. The total pop tabs that the GFWC Nebraska Federation has given are 10,378,750. The Nebraska Federation also gave Warneke a check for $556.92 from collections from club's monthly meetings. Various chairpersons gave reports and awards to clubs submitting written reports for their year's work. Cheryl Strickler, NFWC President -Elect, presented changes to the existing bylaws. Several clubs, including the GFWC Papillion Juniors, marched in a procession with their club banners. An update was given on the two-year project of collecting and preserving the history of the Nebraska Federation of Woman's Clubs. An auction and basket raffles were held for fundraising purposes. The 2010 NFWC Convention will be held at Mahoney State Park next April.
Jr. Monarch’s place at Trapshoot
The Jr. Monarch Ladies team, representing La Vista Junior High School, won the second place trophy in the Top Junior High Girls Teams at the 40th annual Cornhusker High School Trapshoot. The team was made up of Lindsay Morrison, Kirsten Thompson, Nikki Carlson, Shaina Simodynes and Kelly Germany.
