Good Things

Spring, fresh alive Spring!

The long, cold winter has finally, begrudgingly, given way to green, vibrant Spring. And that’s good news.

We’re ready for some good news. While our TVs scream murder and mayhem and the Internet brings much of the same by way of innuendo, gossip and raunchy stuff unfit for kids, our Ralston Recorder is chock-full of good news.

I invite you to turn off the TV, log off the computer and sit down with your Ralston newspaper.

This week’s column is merely an extension of all that is good in Ralston.

Ralston schools staff members came up with an idea last fall to dress casual once a month and raise some money for a worthy cause. Beginning in October, each participant paid $5 for the opportunity to wear jeans. That wasn’t all. Donated prizes were awarded in raffles for those taking part.

Some even kicked in money when they knew they weren’t going to be there, said Shelly Hanson at Central Office. “That was always the most heartwarming thing,” Shelly said.

Their final Jeans Day on St. Patrick’s Day netted more than $1,000.

Hanson reports that $5,700 was donated to the Omaha Food Bank and the Tri-City Food Bank (which services those in need in Ralston). The Omaha Food Bank has helped out at Karen Western on several occasions.

For each $1 donated to the Omaha Food Bank, $14 worth of food and household products can be purchased, according to their Web site. In other words, Ralston school staffers are responsible for nearly $80,000 Food Bank dollars helping out those in need.

Who would have guessed that six days of wearing jeans could have benefited so many for so little?

Yes, plans are already being made for next year’s Jeans Days. It begins in September. And that’s good.

Want to get rid of old tires for SURE Clean Up Day April 25? Don’t worry about shredding them. Donna Roberts, Ralston assistant city clerk and person in the know when it comes to such things, said, “No, they don’t have to be shredded.” Call her, 331-6677 or the Ralston Area Chamber, 339-7737 for information.

I’m predicting a slamdunk on Sunday, April 26 for the Ralston Reminisce at the Frank and Velma Johnson Archives Museum, 5615 Woodlawn Ave. Coach Bill Heard and members of the 2009 Class B state championship team will meet up with members of the 1964 state championship team from 2 to 4 p.m. Both groups will be honored by the Archives museum and Mayor Don Groesser will read a proclamation. Both trophies will be on display along with 1963/64 yearbooks, articles and photos. The community is invited to stop by and share photos and memories.

Refreshments will be served.

My personal award for Good News of the week goes to Meadows Elementary School who will hold Manners Week May 4-8.  They will be talking with students about manners – everything from everyday manners, table manners, conversational manners and telephone manners.

I can think of a lot of adults who would benefit from spending that week at Meadows.

You guys rock!

Or maybe I should say, You gentlemen and ladies deserve a very special round of applause.

Thank you very much.
